Aldridge Students Experience the Thrill of F1 STEM Racing at In-Comm Telford
A group of Aldridge School students recently enjoyed an exciting and educational visit to In-Comm Training in Telford, where they took part in a hands-on F1 STEM Racing experience.
The day began with students learning about the wide range of careers involved in the world of engineering, design and motorsport. After exploring different job roles, students worked collaboratively to assign responsibilities within their teams, developing valuable teamwork and leadership skills.
With their roles established, teams set about designing their race cars. Students produced several initial concepts before selecting their two strongest designs to take forward for manufacture. Using foam blocks, they carefully transformed their ideas into physical prototypes, applying the design and engineering principles they have been learning in the classroom.
Working in the In-Comm workshop, students used pillar drills to create precise holes for axles and wheels. Accuracy was crucial, with teams recognising that even the smallest measurement could have a significant impact on their car's performance. Throughout the process, students considered how to streamline their vehicles to maximise speed and efficiency.
Quality control played an important role during the project, with students checking each other's work and offering support where needed. They then used coping saws to shape their designs before carefully filing the foam to create a smooth finish, reducing drag and giving their cars the best possible chance of success on the track.
The highlight of the day came when the cars were put to the test. Powered by CO₂ gas cartridges, the miniature race cars were launched down the track as teams eagerly watched the results of their hard work. Students raced against one another in a series of exciting heats before an overall winning team was crowned.
Following the competition, students were given a fascinating tour of the In-Comm Training facilities. They explored a range of specialist training areas, with the welding workshop proving to be a particular highlight as students gained further insight into future career opportunities within engineering and manufacturing.
The trip provided an excellent opportunity for students to apply their classroom learning in a practical, real-world setting while developing skills in teamwork, problem-solving, communication and engineering design.
